Since 2014, Penguin Random House has donated over two million books to children and families participating in Save the Children鈥檚 programs and has also supported many of the global humanitarian organization鈥檚 emergency response efforts around the world. The publisher is renewing its commitment by giving an additional one million books to children over the next three years. This investment to expand global access to books marks the largest global donation of books in Save the Children鈥檚 history.
Today, in celebration of Giving Tuesday and the 10th anniversary of partnership, for every book purchased on penguinrandomhouse.com through December 10, Penguin Random House will donate $1 to Save the Children, up to $10,000. Additionally, the publisher has launched a special unlimited matching gifts program for their employees to commemorate a decade of successful collaboration. Together, these initiatives will result in a $20,000 investment in Save the Children鈥檚 early education programming to nurture the next generation of readers and advance literacy in rural America.
The need for children鈥檚 literacy programming and access to books has never been more urgent. Today, primary school-aged children cannot read or write and more than half of all three to six-year-olds lack access to preschool. Further, , two-thirds of them girls, will never enroll in school. The pandemic has exacerbated this literacy crisis, and while schools have since reopened, of 10-year-olds in low-to-middle-income countries are unable to read.
